Early Intervention (EI)

"Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed."

-Maria Montessori

The Early Intervention team works with children and their families to enhance the child’s development through every day learning opportunities and routines.

Early Intervention includes services and supports to infants and toddlers birth to 3 years who have a diagnosed medical condition or developmental delay.

Early Intervention services are provided in the child’s natural environment and are centered on the interest, strengths and priorities of the child and family. A natural environment could be their home, the park, the grocery store, anywhere that the child goes with the caregiver.

The children can be referred for services in a variety of ways and are assessed and evaluated for eligibility both to enter the program and as they transition into preschool.

The Highland County Board of Developmental Disabilities works collaboratively with many agencies as well as the 5 local school districts to support children through developmental milestones.

Highland County Board of DD employs an early intervention team consisting of Developmental Specialists, Occupational and Speech Therapists and a contracted Physical Therapist. The team serves many children and coaches families to build confidence and competence in raising their children.

The HCBDD also employs Service Coordinators to serve eligible children with a delay.

We offer Playgroups at the center to add social interaction with peers, an opportunity to enjoy new activities and to engage with organized, planned outings with our Developmental team.

Continued success in the programs we offer include Aquatic Therapy and the research/evidence-based PLAY project.

In 2018 Newborn Behavior Observation was added to the services offered.

Please contact our welcoming staff, if you have any questions about your child’s development or would like to request an evaluation.
